About This Tour

The Definitive Old & New Delhi Full Day Tour — Why 8 Hours Changes Everything

Delhi is not one city — it is two cities that have grown together over centuries, each with a completely different personality, architecture, pace, and energy. Old Delhi is medieval, Mughal, labyrinthine, and overwhelming in the most magnificent way: a living 17th-century city where spice merchants and silverware hammers and the call to prayer from Jama Masjid create a sensory experience found nowhere else on earth. New Delhi is imperial, planned, geometrically rational, and deeply calm by comparison.

The old and new Delhi full day tour is the only format that gives you both, and eight hours is exactly the right amount of time to do both justice without rushing. Our old New Delhi sightseeing 8 hours package begins with Old Delhi in the morning when the bazaars are at their most atmospheric and the monuments least crowded, transitions to a proper lunch break, and spends the afternoon in New Delhi's imperial landscapes as the light turns golden over the sandstone monuments. It is the most complete way to understand the capital in a single day.

At Delight Tours India, our Old and New Delhi full day tour is entirely private — your own air-conditioned car, your own certified expert guide, your own schedule. We have run this tour continuously since 1999, refining the timing, the sequence, and the selection of sites until every element serves your experience optimally. Our guides are Ministry of Tourism-certified Delhi specialists who have spent their careers mastering the stories, history, architecture, and cultural context of every monument on the route.

Two Cities, One Day

Morning in Old Delhi, Afternoon in New Delhi

  • Gurudwara Sis Ganj (optional)

  • India Gate — 1931 war memorial

8 Hours Private A/C Car Certified Expert Guide
1

09:00 AM — Hotel Pickup, Delhi

Your driver and guide arrive at your hotel or any Delhi address at 9:00 AM sharp — a time we've chosen carefully because Old Delhi's monuments and bazaars are at their finest in the morning before crowds build. The pickup time can be adjusted 30–60 minutes earlier or later to suit your hotel location and preferences. Your certified expert guide introduces themselves, outlines the day's itinerary, and answers any immediate questions during the drive to Old Delhi — typically 20–40 minutes depending on where you are staying.

2

Red Fort (Lal Qila) — UNESCO World Heritage

The old and new Delhi full day tour begins at the Red Fort — Shah Jahan's monumental palace-fortress built between 1638 and 1648 from red sandstone quarried near Agra. The fort served as the seat of Mughal imperial power for 213 years — from its inauguration in 1648 until the British deposed the last Mughal Emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar II, after the 1857 revolt — and today stands as one of Delhi's most powerful symbols, the location from which India's Prime Minister addresses the nation each Independence Day.

Inside the 2.5-kilometre perimeter wall, your guide walks you through the Lahore Gate (the main ceremonial entrance), the Chhatta Chowk (the covered bazaar where the emperor's court shopped), the Naubat Khana (the drum house where musicians announced the emperor's arrivals), the Diwan-i-Aam (Hall of Public Audience, where Shah Jahan received petitions from his subjects on his legendary jewelled throne), and the Diwan-i-Khas (Hall of Private Audience, where the Peacock Throne once stood) along with the marble palaces and gardens beyond.

3

Chandni Chowk — Cycle Rickshaw & Spice Market

Directly across from the Red Fort stands Chandni Chowk — one of the most extraordinary market streets in the world, operating continuously since Shah Jahan built it in 1650 as the commercial heart of his new capital. A cycle rickshaw ride (included in all packages) navigates the street and its branching lanes — the pedaling rhythm creating an irresistible immersion in the sensory world of Old Delhi. Your guide directs the route through Dariba Kalan (the silver market, where jewellers have traded for generations) and on toward Khari Baoli, Asia's largest spice market.

4

Jama Masjid — India's Largest Mosque

A short walk from Chandni Chowk, Jama Masjid — built by Shah Jahan between 1644 and 1656, with capacity for 25,000 worshippers in its vast courtyard — is one of India's most magnificent architectural achievements. The mosque's construction employed 5,000 workers over 12 years; the red sandstone structure features three domes of white marble and two 40-meter minarets. The southern minaret offers Delhi's finest panoramic view across the rooftops of Old Delhi — the Red Fort, the medieval skyline, and the city stretching to the horizon.

5

Lunch Break — Guide's Recommendation

Your guide recommends the best lunch option for your preferences and budget — from a traditional Old Delhi Mughal restaurant like Karim's (est. 1913, legendary mutton korma and seekh kebabs, five minutes from Jama Masjid) to a comfortable sit-down restaurant in the transition area between Old and New Delhi. Vegetarian-only options are available at excellent establishments nearby. Lunch is not included in the tour price, but your guide ensures you eat exceptionally well within your chosen budget.

6

Humayun's Tomb — UNESCO World Heritage

The transition from Old Delhi to New Delhi is marked by one of India's most significant and beautiful buildings: Humayun's Tomb (1565), the garden-tomb commissioned by the Mughal Emperor Humayun's senior wife Haji Begum and designed by the Persian architect Mirak Mirza Ghiyas.

It holds an architectural significance that most visitors underestimate: this is the building that directly invented the Mughal garden-tomb formula — the Persian char bagh garden divided by water channels into four quadrants, the elevated plinth raising the tomb above the garden, the double dome achieving height without sacrificing interior elegance, and the combination of red sandstone and white marble inlay — every element that would reach its supreme expression in the Taj Mahal 67 years later.

7

Qutub Minar — UNESCO World Heritage

The Qutub Minar is India's tallest ancient monument, a 72.5-meter minaret of carved red and buff sandstone begun in 1193 by Qutb ud-Din Aibak, immediately after the establishment of the Delhi Sultanate, the first Islamic empire in India. The tower was completed by his successor, Iltutmish, and further added to by Firuz Shah Tughlaq. Its surface is covered with intricate calligraphic inscriptions from the Quran and decorative bands of different motifs — each story a different style.

The surrounding Qutub Complex is equally rich: the Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque (the first mosque built in India after the Islamic conquest), and the extraordinary Iron Pillar of Chandragupta II — a 7-metre column of iron dating from approximately 375–415 CE that has not developed a trace of rust in 1,600 years despite standing in the open air, a remarkable achievement of early Indian metallurgical technology that remains unexplained by modern metallurgists.

8

India Gate, Rajpath & Rashtrapati Bhavan Area

The old new Delhi sightseeing 8 hours tour closes with New Delhi's grandest public space — the ceremonial axis of Kartavya Path (formerly Rajpath), stretching from India Gate (Edwin Lutyens' 42-metre sandstone war memorial, 1931, commemorating 84,000 Indian soldiers killed in World War I, with its eternal Amar Jawan Jyoti flame) westward to the imposing bulk of Rashtrapati Bhavan (the President of India's 340-room official residence, designed by Lutyens and completed in 1929 at the heart of the imperial capital).

The late afternoon light on New Delhi's sandstone boulevards — particularly in winter — is among the city's most beautiful visual experiences: long golden shadows across the wide avenues, the Parliament building visible to the north, and the human theatre of Delhi families gathering around India Gate's fountains and lawns for their evening stroll. Your guide contextualizes the political and urban-planning story of Lutyens' New Delhi as you take it all in.

9

~05:30 PM — Hotel / Airport Drop, Tour Complete

Your driver returns you to your hotel, the airport, or any Delhi address by approximately 5:30 PM — completing the old and new Delhi full day tour with the same seamless private care with which it began. Your guide provides a final briefing on anything you'd like to explore independently in the evening — restaurant recommendations, evening markets, or cultural events — and is available by phone for the remainder of your Delhi stay. If you are extending into the Golden Triangle tour, your guide will help you plan the onward journey.

Expert Tips

Insider Advice for Your Old New Delhi Sightseeing 8 Hours

1

Morning Is Everything

Old Delhi is dramatically better before noon. By 10 AM, the Chandni Chowk lanes are busy but manageable; by 2 PM, they are packed. Our 9 AM start puts you in the bazaars during the finest window — fresh produce, full food stalls, and the best photography light of the day.

2

Comfortable Flat Shoes

You'll walk 4–6 kilometers across cobblestones, marble, sandstone, and uneven gali surfaces. Flat, closed-toe, comfortable shoes are essential — socks are needed at Jama Masjid and optionally at the Qutub Minar plinth. Sandals with easy clasps save time at shoe-removal points.

3

Dress Code at Mosques

Jama Masjid requires covered shoulders and knees for all visitors. Lightweight scarves are provided by your guide if needed. Wear light, breathable cotton — Delhi's streets are warm even in the cooler months. Remove shoes at the mosque entrance and carry them in the provided bags.

4

Carry Rupee Cash

Monument entry, rickshaw tips, chai, snacks, and bazaar purchases all require Indian Rupees. Budget ₹2,000–₹3,000 per person in cash for the day's incidentals. Your guide will advise on the morning of the exact amounts needed for your specific itinerary choices.
