Arrive in Jaisalmer, where our representative meets you and stores your luggage. Begin straight away by entering Jaisalmer Fort through the Hawa Pol gate and walking the interior lanes. The Jain temples within the fort compound are among the finest examples of medieval carved marble in Rajasthan, with filigree ceilings that took generations of craftsmen to complete. The northeastern rampart offers the only elevated view of the desert that requires no vehicle.
Post-lunch, explore the havelis of the merchant quarter. Patwon Ki Haveli – five connected mansions built by a prosperous brocade merchant in the 19th century – displays the zenith of Jaisalmer's sandstone carving tradition. Continue to Nathmal Ki Haveli and Salim Singh Ki Haveli, both within walking distance, before freshening up ahead of the desert transfer.
Your private transfer departs for Sam at 3:30 PM, arriving before the light peaks. Mount your camel at the base of the dune system and begin the one-hour safari to the summit. Arrive at your tented camp as the first stars appear. Wake at 5:30 AM for the short pre-dawn walk to the dune crest. The sky lightens from black to indigo to a thin line of rose gold above the dune horizon – sunrise light on the Sam dunes is softer and more diffuse than sunset, with a stillness the evening breeze does not offer. Breakfast is served at camp, followed by your return transfer to Jaisalmer for your onward journey.
