Ride the elephant ramp or take a jeep to Amber Fort, then explore the mirrored Sheesh Mahal and the Diwan-e-Aam. Drive into the Aravalli hills to Nahargarh Fort for panoramic views over the Pink City, then visit the Albert Hall Museum, Rajasthan's oldest, housed in a striking Indo-Saracenic building.
A scenic 340-km morning drive west to Jodhpur (approx. 5–6 hours) through small Marwari towns and open countryside. Arrive in time for a late-afternoon visit to Mehrangarh Fort, widely considered the finest example of Rajput military architecture, and watch the blue-washed old city turn gold at sunset. A rooftop restaurant overlooking the fort is the ideal place to close the day.
Visit the museum wing of Umaid Bhawan Palace and the serene white-marble cenotaph of Jaswant Thada nearby. Then take the long but scenic 290-km drive further west into the Thar Desert (approx. 5 hours), with the landscape thinning into open desert. Check into your Jaisalmer hotel, with an optional evening walk near Gadisar Lake.
Explore Jaisalmer Fort, the only living fort-city in India, where families still reside within the ramparts, and visit the Jain temple complex inside. In the afternoon, see Patwon-ki Haveli and Nathmal-ji-ki Haveli, two of the city's most intricately carved merchant mansions. Close with a relaxed boat ride or lakeside walk at Gadisar Lake as the golden walls catch the last light.
A short morning excursion to the mysterious 13th-century abandoned village of Kuldhara. In the afternoon, take a 1.5 to 2-hour camel safari to the Sam Sand Dunes, timed for the golden-hour light. Overnight at a desert camp with a Rajasthani thali dinner, bonfire and live folk music under an open desert sky.
An early start rewards you with one of the most peaceful sunrises in Rajasthan, the desert still cool and quiet. Return to town for breakfast, then transfer to Jaisalmer airport or railway station for your onward journey. The tour concludes.

Best time of year: The ideal conditions fall between late October and February, with cool mornings to visit forts and mild nights to enjoy the desert campsite. Evening temperatures at Sam Sand Dunes can drop near freezing in November and December, so bring warm clothing. In March and April we shift sightseeing to the early morning or late afternoon, while the monsoon months (July–September) are the quietest and most affordable, with the desert taking on a rare sparse green.
Packing for the desert camp night: Even in warmer months, desert nights cool quickly after sunset, so carry a light jacket or shawl. Closed shoes are more practical than sandals for the camel safari, and a scarf or bandana helps with occasional gusts of fine sand. Camps provide blankets, but guests who run cold should pack an extra layer for November through January.
